The North Shore's Garden Advocate

Heather Johnstone runs the Edible Garden Project on Vancouver’s North Shore.

Just wrapping up its 4th year, the the project encourages residents to share their bounty with people in need, as well as putting together a variety of urban agriculture and community garden projects.

This week, Heather and team opened the  Queen Mary Community Garden, located in the City of North Vancouver.  Those of you who aren’t from the North Shore may not be aware that there is both City of North Vancouver, and a District of North Vancouver.  Heather’s project involves both municipalities.

Earlier this summer, I spoke to Heather about the project and where things are going with urban agriculture on the North Shore. We met up at the Lower Lonsdale Community Garden…

North Shore Wants You to Can It

20090310_canit-smThere’s a new anti-litter campaign organized by the District and City of North Vancouver.

Richard emailed VanGoGreen to let us know about this new info and volunteer campaign aimed at litter reduction and cleanups.

Says Richard:

A litter-free clean neighbourhood encourages and increases property values, and contributes to public safety and order which adds to a better quality of life and healthier environment.

We need to promote partnership, working together and individual responsibility to make this all happen. Will you help control litter where you live? Are you able to give a few hours once a week, once a month to make your area, your block, your street, litter free?

If you want to get involved, visit their web site, CanItNorthVan.com, and also spread the word.

From the web site, here are the goals of the campaign

  • To foster community pride in litter free neighbourhoods.
  • An organizing focus for litter pick-up campaigns.
  • To spread the word that litter is bad for the environment, unfavorable for buisiness, a deterant for tourism, costly to the taxpayer, and anti-social in behavior.

Jan 24 | Mahon Park Ivy Pull

Happy New Year to all of you, I hope 2009 brings everyone good things and joy!

I don’t know about all of you, but I’m really looking forward to spending time in the park and getting down to business.

As a matter of fact, our first stewardship event of 2009 is coming up, Saturday, January 24th.

It would be great if we could recruit lots of new people this year, so if you know anyone looking for a new year’s resolution, why not recommend to them the monthly Ivy Pull. The more the merrier I say!

What: Make 2009 the greenest year yet. Kick things off by helping us remove invasive ivy from the park.

*If there is a lot of snow on the ground there is a small chance that we may need to cancel. If there is snow falling from the sky, it shouldn’t stop us from doing our work! If you are unsure, please contact Shirlene at the information below to find out whether the event is a go or not.
