Proactive… precycling

A new movement it afloat. It is dubbed ‘precycling’. You might be on-board already.

It is always interesting to unknowing be be part of a movement. I feel like I have a little taste for what bands must feel. The familiar dialogue, the reporter asks “how do you categorize your music?” and the response, “our music doesn’t really fit any label”. But that doesn’t last long. Other musicians get inspired by their approach to music, and soon a new music classification is created. Back to drawing board.

So I found out my family are ‘precyclers’:

Among the early-adopter segment of eco-conscious consumers, The Intelligence Group has observed a new trend called “precycling” and believes it will grow.

Consumers who precycle aren’t just content with throwing cans and bottles in the recycle bin and letting waste management sort it out. With increasing consumer interest in sustainable living, those engaged in precycling aim to avoid products that create more superfluous stuff. This could mean everything from buying bulk in order to avoid excess packaging to reusing everything from water bottles to shopping bags (the latter of which has caught on with retailers and the public at large). The most recent precycling project we took on was cutting down or eliminating plastic. Not just plastic bags, but plastic containers of all sorts. It started by looking at how we were buying products. I good example was when Pom came out with iced tea in glass jars (which are now discontinued). We liked the idea and the glass jars so much that we added six of the glasses into our drinking glass rotation… why not.

If I dig a little bit deeper, I guess our parents really started the trend. At the time I found it really annoying to find leftovers in a the yogurt container when I was excited to actually eat yogurt. Now it looks my mom’s thinking was revolutionary and she was a trend setter. OK… maybe that is pushing it.

So hop aboard and join the precycling wave, it is a fun challenge.
