Worse than GMOs?

There is overwhelming consumer support to label foods that contain GMOs all over the world. However, maybe even of a greater concern is the progression of nanotechnology. As it unknowingly seeps into our food, the UK leading organic certifying body, The Soil Association, has taken steps to make sure it stays out of organic food.

The Soil Association said its position was at the core of the organic movement’s values of protecting human health.

Gundula Azeez, Soil Association policy manager, said: “We are deeply concerned at the government’s failure to follow scientific advice and regulate products. There should be an immediate freeze on the commercial release of nanomaterials until there is a sound body of scientific research into all the health impacts.”

He compared the developments with genetically modified foods, another area that has been controversial, with many consumers suspicious of the technology involved.

BC Schools Get Hybrid School Bus

IC-Corp hybrid busKelowna will be the first school district in BC to get a diesel-electric hybrid school bus, part of a provincial government plan to get almost 90 cleaner school buses online.

Cloned Milk more than science fiction.

Throw the precautionary principle out the window. The FDA has approved meat & milk from cloned animals. This is yet another reason for US consumers to choose organic.

“Cloning is another breeding technology that has evolved and has now been demonstrated to be safe.”

FDA researchers collected data on more than 600 U.S. cloned animals and their offspring. Scientists examined a range of considerations, including size, health, blood characteristics and behaviour of cloned animals, according to the report. The study also said nutrient levels in meat and milk from cloned animals were comparable with traditionally bred animals.

“The data show that healthy adult clones are virtually indistinguishable” from traditionally bred animals, the report said.

article_presentation-house.jpg

We use the recyling depot near 2nd narrow bridge, but for people in North Vancouver without a car, or who don’t have the variety of recyclables we have, this might be quite handy.

I received this information by email today from North Vancouver’s presentation house.

Its really great to have more optionsĀ  for recyling plastics. Continue reading

Smart Meter Talks Back

tantalus meter smart gridA Burnaby company has been developing a smarter meter reader. They’re currently being used in Ontario, California and some southern US states, and are part of a larger vision for ‘smart’ energy networks.

At its most basic function, Tantalus Systems ‘smart’ meters let the home owner know what’s going on with their energy consumption. Right now, these meters simply record power consumption. A story in the Montreal Gazette explains:

the meters look virtually the same as all other electrical meters, but that they include a radio transmitter that lets consumers know when they’re spending more money. Energy typically costs more to produce during peak times when more people are using it – around the dinner hour, for instance, when people are cooking, using dishwashers and maybe throwing in a load of laundry. full story here

A quick look at the Tantalus web site shows that this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of their plans for managing power consumption, with networked meters talking to a central system and even allowing for remote control. Basically, each meter is part of a larger local area network – smart grid.

On the face of it, it makes perfect sense. If nothing else, maybe it’ll do away with the archaic system actually sending someone out to your home to read the meter. Aside from that mundane task, the benefits of a smart meter are obvious in helping home owners be more selective about their power consumption.

But you don’t have to wait until the technology gets implemented to do something. You can act now.

Irish Plan to Make Electricity from Chicken Waste

Sparked by a governmental directive to reduce the amount of nitrogen dumped on crop land, an Irish group hopes to use chicken waste to make electricity.

The company believes using poultry bedding as a fuel source will enable Northern Ireland to comply with this directive by removing a huge amount of material which previously would have been destined for land-spread.

Rose Energy director, Mike Alcorn said: “This is an exciting project for Northern Ireland, using proven technology to deliver huge benefits to the province on two key fronts – improving the environment and generating renewable energy.” full story in the Farmers Weekly Interactive
